IndiGo Flight Chaos: Over 400 Flights Cancelled, Airports in Disarray

IndiGo flight cancellations have thrown air travel across India into turmoil, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and frustrated. On December 5 alone, the airline cancelled more than 400 flights nationwide as the disruption continued for a fourth straight day. People at airports are facing long waits, confusion, and uncertainty as schedules remain unpredictable.

At Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, over 200 flights were cancelled, while Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports saw more than 100 and 90 cancellations, respectively. Long queues, tired passengers, and overcrowded terminals have become a common sight, with many complaining about poor communication and a lack of assistance.

What Is Causing the IndiGo Flight Crisis?

The primary reason behind the flight cancellations appears to be a severe crew shortage. The newly enforced pilot duty-time and rest-period rules by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have disrupted scheduling and reduced available manpower. IndiGo, which operates more than 2,200 flights daily, is struggling to adjust rosters quickly enough to comply with the new regulations.

Operational challenges and scheduling bottlenecks have worsened the situation. With its high dependency on tight crew shifts and fast turnaround times, even a slight disruption is now triggering widespread cancellations.

Passenger Impact: Frustration and Uncertainty

At several airports, passengers reported waiting for hours without clear updates, food, or alternative arrangements. Many travellers — including families with children, elderly passengers, and medical travellers — expressed anger and distress over the lack of support.

Missed meetings, delayed vacations, and disrupted plans have amplified the frustration. Social media platforms are filled with images and videos showing chaos inside airports, showcasing what many call the worst domestic aviation crisis in recent times.

Regulatory Scrutiny and Airline Response

The DGCA has taken note of the chaos and called IndiGo’s senior management for a detailed explanation. Authorities have instructed airports to improve facilities for stranded passengers, including providing water, meals, and resting zones.

IndiGo has issued a public apology, acknowledging the operational challenges and assuring efforts to minimise disruptions. The airline has requested temporary relief or adjustments to duty-time rules while it works to increase crew availability and stabilise schedules. Get the latest updates with FM News.
