Introduction: US Lawmakers Challenge Trump’s India Tariffs
US lawmakers seek to end Trump tariffs on India after three members of the US House of Representatives introduced a resolution opposing the former president’s trade measures. They argue that the tariffs were imposed illegally and damaged economic and strategic ties between the two countries.
Resolution Introduced in the US House of Representatives
The resolution has been introduced by Congresswoman Deborah Ross, Congressman Marc Veasey, and Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi. It aims to terminate the national emergency declaration used to justify steep import duties on Indian goods.
Background of the 50% Tariffs on Indian Goods
Earlier, the Trump administration imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports starting August 1, 2025. Soon after, another 25 per cent “secondary” duty was added. As a result, total tariffs on many Indian-origin products rose to 50 per cent.
Trump Administration’s Justification for the Tariffs
The administration linked the tariffs to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil during the Ukraine war. It claimed that such trade indirectly supported Moscow’s war efforts, which prompted the use of emergency powers.
Lawmakers Reject Use of Emergency Trade Powers
However, the lawmakers strongly disputed this reasoning. They said the International Emergency Economic Powers Act was misused. Moreover, they argued that trade policy decisions should remain under Congress’s authority.
Impact on North Carolina’s Economy Highlighted
Congresswoman Deborah Ross pointed to India’s economic importance to North Carolina. She said Indian companies have invested more than a billion dollars in the state. These investments have created thousands of jobs in life sciences and technology.
Concerns Over Rising Costs for US Consumers
Meanwhile, Congressman Marc Veasey warned that the tariffs acted as an indirect tax on American households. He said consumers were already facing rising costs. According to him, the tariffs worsened financial pressure on working families.
Krishnamoorthi Warns of Supply Chain Disruptions
Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi criticised the tariffs as counterproductive. He said the duties disrupted supply chains and harmed American workers. He also stressed that stronger US–India cooperation is essential for economic and security interests.
Earlier Push by Lawmakers to Repair US–India Ties
Earlier in October, the same lawmakers joined Congressman Ro Khanna and other members of Congress in urging the President to reverse the tariff policy. They called for repairing strained bilateral relations with India.
Broader Democratic Effort to Reclaim Trade Authority
Supporters say the resolution is part of a broader Democratic effort to reclaim Congress’s constitutional authority over trade. They want to prevent presidents from using emergency powers to impose unilateral tariffs.
Conclusion: Call for Restoring Stable US–India Trade Relations
Therefore, lawmakers backing the resolution believe ending the tariffs will stabilise supply chains and reduce costs. They also argue it will help restore trust and strengthen long-term US–India trade relations.
