From Villagers’ Taunts to World Champion: Haryana’s Minakshi Felicitated by President Murmu
A Childhood Marked by Doubt and Taunts
The journey of Minakshi Hooda, World Boxing Champion, began with constant taunts from villagers. People questioned her dreams and doubted her strength. Instead of breaking down, she chose resilience. Her determination transformed criticism into courage and eventually led her to global victory.
A Mother’s Support That Never Faded
Sunita Devi worked tirelessly at home. She raised livestock, sold milk and handled all responsibilities. Even with these challenges, she encouraged her daughter to follow her passion. Minakshi first played handball, but boxing captured her heart. Once she stepped into the ring, she knew she had found her path.
Family Struggles and Silent Sacrifices
Her father, Krishna Hooda, drove a rented auto-rickshaw for 30 years. Money was always tight, so Sunita took on
extra work to support Minakshi’s training. Although Krishna initially opposed boxing due to societal pressure, Sunita continued sending Minakshi to practice when he was away. This routine lasted four months. When he eventually found out, anger followed, but coach Vijay Hooda intervened. He explained Minakshi’s talent and convinced her father. After she won her first medal, everyone’s confidence changed.
Rising Through the Ranks
Minakshi began her boxing journey in 2013. Step by step, she built a strong record. She won gold at the Junior Nationals in 2017, another gold at the Nationals in 2019 and a silver at the Senior Nationals in 2021. Later, she claimed gold medals at the BRICS and Elorda Cup in 2024. Each achievement pushed her towards her ultimate goal.
A Historic Win for India
The turning point arrived in 2025. Competing at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, Minakshi defeated Kazakhstan’s Olympic medalist Nazym Kyzaibay with a clean 5–0 score. The victory placed her among India’s finest athletes. President Droupadi Murmu honoured her, along with three other boxers, for this remarkable achievement.
A Gesture of Gratitude
In 2022, Minakshi secured a job with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. With her earnings, she bought a second-hand auto-rickshaw for her father. It was her way of thanking him for eventually standing by her side.
As Minakshi Hooda, World Boxing Champion, continued winning medals, her confidence grew strong, er and her family’s support increased.
A Story That Inspires Millions
Minakshi’s journey proves that determination can silence criticism. Her courage turned taunts into applause and doubt into triumph. Today, she stands as an inspiration for every young girl who dreams of breaking barriers.
