Police identified the deceased as Kanwar Digvijay Singh, also known as Rana Balachauria, a Kabaddi player and tournament promoter from Nawanshahr. According to officials, the attackers shot him in the head, leaving him critically injured. Organisers immediately rushed him to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Attackers Used Selfie Pretext Before Opening Fire
Initial investigations revealed that three to four youths approached Rana Balachauria under the pretext of taking a selfie. Moments later, they suddenly opened fire, reportedly discharging four to five rounds. After the shooting, the attackers fled the spot in a Bolero vehicle, which police have identified.
Police Launch Manhunt to Nab Accused

A senior police official confirmed that teams rushed to the site immediately after receiving information. Police cordoned off the area and launched a manhunt to trace the suspects. Authorities said investigators are examining the case from all angles, including CCTV footage and eyewitness statements, to identify and arrest those responsible.
Hospital Confirms Player Was Brought Dead
Fortis Hospital Mohali issued an official statement confirming that 30-year-old Kanwar Digvijay Singh was admitted at 6:05 pm on December 15, 2025, with gunshot wounds. Despite a prompt medical assessment, doctors declared him dead. The hospital expressed condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Opposition Slams AAP Over Law and Order
The incident sparked strong political reactions across Punjab. Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa termed the shooting “unacceptable” and said firing at a public sports event showed a serious breakdown of law and order. He urged the Bhagwant Mann-led government to act immediately to ensure public safety.
Akali Dal and Congress Demand Accountability
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring accused the AAP government of failing to maintain law and order, stating that Punjabis are being forced to live in fear. Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal held the ruling party directly responsible, alleging criminal confidence has risen due to government incompetence. He demanded justice for Rana Balachauria and other Kabaddi players killed in recent years.
