Morne Morkel, India’s bowling coach, has publicly backed the possibility of both veterans being part of the 2027 World Cup squad. He said “if they stay fit, keep working hard, and remain motivated, there’s no reason why not.”

Morkel emphasised their experience and big-tournament temperament as invaluable. He noted having that kind of experience is rare and could give India an edge in pressure games – something you don’t find anywhere.”

The coach’s confidence seems rooted partly in his own past as a bowler who bowled to them. He said even just preparing to bowl to Virat and Rohit used to give him sleepless nights – underlying how dangerous and consistent they’ve been over the years.

However, Morkel’s endorsement comes with a condition, i.e. fitness and form. He was clear that as long as they are mentally and physically ready to put in the work, they could make it.

Both players have already retired from Tests and T20 Internationals. As things stand, they are focusing on ODIs. That reduced frequency of competitive games raises questions about match-readiness and consistency.

There’s also an expectation (or suggestion) they may need to play some domestic cricket at times to stay in form and prove their commitment.

Some insiders and former players remain skeptical. For example, Sourav Ganguly recently warned that with so many ODIs likely before 2027, even players like Kohli and Rohit will have a tough road to sustain their place.

What This Means for the 2027 World Cup Outlook

As of now, the door is open for Virat and Rohit : the camp seems willing to accommodate them, provided they stay fit and perform. That means there is a real possibility they will be in India’s 2027 World Cup squad.

But nothing is locked in. Their inclusion will likely depend on their performance over the next 1–2 years, i.e. both at the international level (in ODIs) and possibly in domestic cricket, to maintain form and match sharpness.

Given their age and reduced match exposure, selectors will wait and see – especially with a long road ahead, and new players pushing for spots.
