As on October 29, Cyclone Montha has caused heavy rain, flood, and uprooted trees in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha after making landfall the night before.

Impact on Andhra Pradesh
• Landfall and Intensity
Cyclone Montha made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada on the evening of October 28. However, the storm hit with a speed of 90-100 km/h and gusts of 110km/h.
• Causalities
One woman in Konaseema district died after an uprooted tree fell on her house.
• Damage
The cyclone uprooted trees, damaged power lines, and caused significant flooding in coastal towns.
• Flooding
Heavy rainfall and waterlogging were reported in parts of Vijayawada and other coastal areas. In Anakapalli district, the Raiwada reservoir released water into the Sarada river after reaching its full capacity.
• Emergency Response
State authorities shifted nearly 76,000 people to relief camps, established 219 medical camps, and banned vehicle movements on ghat roads. Moreover, the government has mobilized earthmovers and chainsaws for clearing uprooted trees.
Impact in Odisha
• Minimal Damage
Mohan Charan Majhi, Odisha’s Chief Minister, stated that the state was largely spared from major damage.
• Reported Effects
Month’s footprints caused heavy rainfall, road blockages due to landslides and fallen trees, and minor damage to houses in several southern districts.
• Affected Areas
Normal life was disrupted in 15 districts, with significant damage reported in Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Gajapat, and Ganjam.
• Preparations
Before the cyclone, over 2,000 relief centres were established, and schools were closed in affected areas.
Current Situation
• Weakening Storm
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Montha has weakened after making landfall and is moving towards the north-western part of the country.
• Ongoing Rain Threat
Despite weakening, the IMD has warned by saying that heavy to very heavy rainfall will likely continue over parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
• Restoration Efforts
Restoration and sanitation work is underway in the most affected areas of both the states. The Central government has promised all necessary aid.
