Another Cyclone Brewing in the Bay of Bengal, Coastal Regions Put on Alert

A new cyclone threat in the Bay of Bengal has heightened concerns along the coast. “It is a developing system, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is still monitoring the development of the system and already has coastal regions on alert. While the system’s exact route is still unclear, the early forecast of possible landfall is between northern Andhra Pradesh and Myanmar.”

Cyclone Forecasted in 48 hours.

IMD says a robust low-pressure area is persisting in the Strait of Malacca and the South Andaman Sea. A cyclonic circulation extends up to around 7.6 km above sea level.

The system moved west-northwestward and has now organized into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal. Meteorologists are predicting that it will develop into a cyclone in the next 48 hours, most likely by the late evening of November 26.

Wind Speeds Expected to Increase From November 25

Weather experts advise that the cyclone will start to intensify on the evening of November 25. Winds in the southeast Bay may rise to speeds of 50 – 70 kmph.

November 26 will see winds escalate to speeds of 60 – 70 kmph, with gusts up to 80 kmph. On the morning of November 27, the winds may further elevate to 100 kmph as the system strengthens.

Complex Weather Systems Delaying Cyclone Movement

Gales also have two active circulations in the southeast Arabian Sea and the Comorin region, together with equatorial atmospheric waves, which they believe are impacting the system.

This is contributing to the cyclone. Movement is being slowed. Experts say the Bay of Bengal cyclone alert became more serious after the system intensified into a depression.

Another low-pressure area may also form near Sri Lanka and the Comorin region, adding complexity to the cyclone’s behavior.

Odisha to Experience Cooler Weather

According to meteorologist Prof. Surendranath Pasupalak, cold winds from the north will flow into Maharashtra on November 27, reducing the temperature. In several districts of Odisha, the minimum temperature could fall below 15°C.

The drop in temperature will dry the air along Odisha’s coast. As a result, the possibility of the cyclone hitting will be low. Meteorologists anticipate forecast modelling to determine the exact landfall position of the cyclone by the evening of November 27.
