What Happened at Marine Drive

Mumbai: Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) founder Teesta Setalvad was briefly detained by police at Marine Drive on Thursday while participating in a protest demonstration carrying placards against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

According to eyewitnesses, Setalvad joined a small group of demonstrators holding placards critical of the Election Commission’s functioning. Police personnel present at the spot detained her along with other protesters, citing restrictions on demonstrations in the area. She was released after a brief detention.

Who Is Teesta Setalvad

Teesta Setalvad is a well-known civil rights activist and the co-founder of Citizens for Justice and Peace, an organisation active on issues of communal harmony and justice for victims of the 2002 Gujarat riots. She has frequently been at the centre of political controversy, with the ruling BJP accusing her of pursuing a political agenda — charges she and her supporters deny.

Why CJP Was Protesting

The demonstration was directed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with protesters raising concerns about the conduct of the Election Commission of India. CJP has in recent months been vocal on electoral issues, including the special intensive revision of electoral rolls and the poll body’s handling of opposition complaints. The demands raised on the placards centred on greater transparency and accountability in the Commission’s functioning.

Reactions Pour In

The detention drew sharp reactions from opposition leaders and civil society groups, who described it as an attempt to stifle peaceful dissent. Several leaders took to social media to condemn the police action and express solidarity with Setalvad.

Others maintained that the police were enforcing prohibitory orders and that the law applies equally to all. The Mumbai Police said the detention was preventive and procedural, and that the protesters were released shortly after.

What Happens Next

CJP has said it will continue its campaign on electoral reforms through lawful means. The incident is likely to add fuel to the ongoing political debate over the Election Commission’s role and the space for protest in the run-up to upcoming elections. Further statements from the Election Commission and the Maharashtra government are awaited.
